File Metadata
Reads a file's type, size and date.
This tool runs on JavaScript. To use it, turn on JavaScript in your browser and reload the page.
SEE WHAT THE FILE REALLY IS.
File Metadata reads the basic details of any file. The name, the size (in bytes as well), the extension and the type according to the content are shown. The type is recognized not from the extension but from the signature in the first bytes of the file; if the two disagree — if a file with a .jpg extension is really a PNG, for example — the tool writes that out as a separate warning. It is used to work out what a file with a lost extension, a wrong name or a suspicious look really is.
The report also holds the SHA-256 and MD5 digests (hashes) of the file. By comparing them with the digest published by a software site, you can confirm that the file you downloaded is not broken or altered. If the file is text, its encoding (UTF-8, Windows Turkish…) and its line, word and character counts are added. The modification date is shown only if your browser reports it; if it does not, it says “unknown” and nothing is guessed. The tool does not change the file. Any kind of file can be uploaded, up to 256 MB; the report can be downloaded as JSON.
From start to finish
- Upload your file. Drag any file in or select it; up to 256 MB.
- Read the report. The File, Time, Digest (hash) and, if there is one, Text section appear line by line.
- Compare or download. Compare the SHA-256 value with the published digest; save the report as JSON if you want.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hash (digest) for?
It is the fingerprint of the file: if a single byte changes, the digest changes completely. If the digest of the file you downloaded is the same as the published one, the file is complete and unaltered.
SHA-256 or MD5?
Use SHA-256 for verification. MD5 is still published widely, but it is not counted as safe against deliberate changes; it is only enough to catch accidental damage.
What does the warning “the extension says … but the content looks like …” mean?
The name of the file and its content do not match. Most of the time it is harmless (an image saved wrongly), but with a file you were not expecting, be careful and check where it came from before opening it.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
