HOW MANY KILOBYTES IN A MEGABYTE?
The File Size Converter converts a value between the units B, KB, MB, GB, TB and PB. The moment you enter the value and its unit, what it comes to in every unit appears. The setting that really matters is the way of counting, because two different systems are in use and the most common confusion comes from there. In the binary system 1 KB = 1024 bytes; operating systems count file and disk sizes that way. In the decimal system 1 kB = 1000 bytes; the makers of disks, memory cards and USB sticks write capacity that way.
That is why a disk with 1 TB on the box shows about 931 GB on a computer: no space is lost, there are only two different ways of counting. Beside the result in the system you chose, the tool also writes the difference from the other system. It is used to work out whether an email attachment is over the limit, whether a video will fit on a memory card, or how many files a cloud quota will take. The calculation is done entirely in your browser; the numbers you enter are not sent anywhere.
From start to finish
- Enter the value. Write the number and choose its unit (B, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB).
- Choose the way of counting. Binary (1024) for the value you see on your computer; decimal (1000) for the capacity written on the box.
- Read the result. What it comes to in every unit and the difference between the two systems appear instantly.
Frequently asked questions
How many KB in 1 MB?
1024 KB in the binary system, 1000 KB in the decimal system. Your operating system generally uses the binary system when it shows a file size.
What do KiB and MiB mean?
They are the exact names of the binary units: 1 KiB = 1024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB. In everyday use they are mostly still written KB and MB; that is where the confusion comes from.
Why does my 128 GB phone show less space?
The 128 GB on the box is counted decimally and comes to about 119 GB in the binary system. The operating system and the preinstalled apps also take up space.
Is the data I enter sent to the server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type or add is sent to the RUPO Studio server. It keeps working while the page is open even if your internet connection drops. No account needed. It is free to use: there is no hourly or daily limit, and we don't make you watch an ad before you see the result.
