HOW MANY WORDS, HOW MANY MINUTES?
The Word Counter works out the statistics of the text you paste or type straight away: the word count, the character count with and without spaces, an approximate sentence count, and the number of paragraphs and lines. The results update as the text changes. Use it to check homework and article limits, social media character limits, the length of a meta description or the script of a presentation.
The tool also gives two time estimates: silent reading is worked out at 200 words per minute and reading aloud, or a voice-over, at 140 words per minute. If you are preparing a video narration, a podcast or a speech, the voice-over time shows how many minutes the text will take. Words are separated on spaces; spellings such as “e-mail” or “1,000” count as a single word. In writing systems that do not put spaces between words it is more accurate to look at the character count than at the word count. The sentence count is approximate, because the full stop in abbreviations such as “etc.” or “Dr.” can be taken for the end of a sentence. The text is processed entirely in your browser.
From start to finish
- Paste the text. Paste the text into the box or type it straight in.
- Read the numbers. The word, character, sentence, paragraph and line counts appear instantly.
- Look at the time. The silent reading and voice-over times update with the length of the text.
Frequently asked questions
Does the character count include spaces?
Two numbers are given separately: with spaces and without. Social media limits are usually based on the character count with spaces.
How is the reading time worked out?
The word count is divided by 200 words per minute for silent reading and by 140 for a voice-over. These are widely accepted averages; the real speed depends on the person and on the text.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The counting is done entirely in your browser; the text is not sent to the RUPO Studio server.
Is the data I enter sent to the server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type or add is sent to the RUPO Studio server. It keeps working while the page is open even if your internet connection drops. No account needed. It is free to use: there is no hourly or daily limit, and we don't make you watch an ad before you see the result.
