MKV → MP4 converts Matroska (MKV) videos to MP4. MKV is a flexible container: because the file survives even if a recording is cut off, it is a common choice in recording programs such as OBS, and archived videos are often in this format too. But the iPhone, many smart TVs, social networks and some editing programs do not accept MKV. MP4 opens on nearly all of these devices.
“Conversion method” is set to “Without re-encoding when possible (fast, lossless)” by default: if the picture inside the MKV is already H.264, it is moved to MP4 as it is; the job takes seconds and the quality does not change. If the audio is AAC, it is copied too; AC-3, Opus or Vorbis audio is encoded to AAC. If the picture is HEVC, VP9 or another codec, it is re-encoded to H.264. MKV can carry several audio tracks, subtitles and chapters; only the picture and a single audio track go into the MP4. You can upload up to 8 videos at once, each up to 10 GB.
From start to finish
- Upload your MKV file. Drag the file in or select it. The video and audio codecs, the resolution and the duration are read.
- Choose the method. The default method is right for most jobs. If you want the picture re-encoded no matter what, choose “Always re-encode to H.264”.
- Convert and download. Download the finished MP4; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Will quality drop when I convert my OBS recording to MP4?
OBS recordings usually carry H.264 video and AAC audio; in that case both are moved without re-encoding and the quality stays identical. If the recording was made with HEVC or AV1, the picture is encoded to H.264 and there is a small loss.
Do subtitles carry over to MP4?
Not with this tool: subtitles and chapters inside the MKV are not transferred to MP4. If you want to keep subtitles, use the “Video Compressor” tool; it carries subtitles in its MP4 output.
Which audio comes through from an MKV with several audio tracks?
A single audio track goes into the MP4: the track marked as default in the file, which in most files is the first one. This tool has no setting for choosing another language track.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
