TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR GIF.
Edit GIF does six jobs on the animated GIF you have: selecting a range, changing the width, changing the speed, lowering the frame rate, reducing the colour count and playing it backwards. All of them are applied in the same pass and the output is a GIF again.
The two settings that shrink the file most are the colour count and the frame rate. A GIF carries at most 256 colours; dropping to 64 or 128 makes the file noticeably smaller on most content without a visible difference. Pulling the frame rate down to 10–12 has a similar effect. The palette is built from the GIF's own colours rather than being reduced to a fixed web palette, so the colours are not distorted.
From start to finish
- Upload your GIF. Drag or pick the file. Both the input and the output are in GIF format.
- Make your settings. Set the range, width, speed, frame rate and colour count. Any setting left at 0 is not changed.
- Process and download. Start it; the file downloads directly when it is ready.
Frequently asked questions
My GIF is too big, how do I shrink it?
First drop the colour count from 256 to 64 or 128, then pull the frame rate down to 10–12. On most GIFs those two halve the file without visibly degrading the image. If that is not enough, reduce the width.
Does changing the speed change the duration too?
Yes. 2× speed halves the duration, 0.5× doubles it. The number of frames stays the same; the delay between frames changes.
Does lowering the colour count spoil the image?
On GIFs containing photographs, banding starts below 64. On cartoons, screen recordings and flat-coloured content even 32 colours can be enough. Try 128 first.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
