WILL IT COME OUT SHARP IN PRINT?
The Image DPI Calculator converts between the pixel size of an image and its print size. It works in two directions: if you enter the pixel size and the DPI, it finds how many centimetres the image can be printed at; if you enter the size you want to print in centimetres and the DPI, it tells you the pixel size needed. DPI is the number of dots per inch, and 1 inch is 2.54 cm.
The ready DPI values are 72 (screen, the old default), 150 (draft printing), 300 (the print-shop standard) and 600 (high-quality printing). The result shows the pixel size, the print size in centimetres, millimetres and inches, and the total number of pixels. If the value you chose is below 300 DPI, you are reminded that softening may show in print; for images that will be used on screen that does not matter. It is used to see whether your image is enough before preparing a poster, a business card, a photo print or a book cover. The calculation is done in your browser.
From start to finish
- Choose the direction. Pixels + DPI → print size, or print size + DPI → pixels needed.
- Enter the values. Write the pixel size or the size in centimetres and choose the DPI.
- Read the result. The print size or the pixels needed appear instantly. If it is not enough, think about enlarging the image.
Frequently asked questions
How many cm can a 3000 × 2000 pixel photo be printed at?
About 25.4 × 16.9 cm at 300 DPI. At 150 DPI it prints at twice that, about 50.8 × 33.9 cm, but it looks softer from close up.
Does changing the DPI value of the file raise the quality?
No. What sets the quality is the number of pixels. The DPI only says how much area those pixels will be spread over on paper.
What can I do if my image is not enough?
You can print it smaller, lower the DPI or enlarge the image. To enlarge it by adding detail with artificial intelligence, try the “Image Quality Enhancer” tool.
Is the data I enter sent to the server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type or add is sent to the RUPO Studio server. It keeps working while the page is open even if your internet connection drops. No account needed. It is free to use: there is no hourly or daily limit, and we don't make you watch an ad before you see the result.
