DON'T GET STUCK ON THE “2 MB MAX” LIMIT.
The Thumbnail Compressor brings an image down to the file size you want. Here you give a target size rather than a quality: write a value between 10 and 5000 KB, and the default is 300 KB. The tool finds the highest quality that stays under the target by binary search; qualities between 25% and 96% are tried and the result is reached in at most eight attempts. It is designed so that you do not get stuck on limits such as the “2 MB max” of platforms, forms and email systems. Before aiming for the target size, “Maximum width” can bring the image down to 2560, 1920, 1280 or 800 pixels; smaller images are not enlarged.
A large photo may not come down to the target even at the lowest quality. With the “Also reduce the dimensions if needed” option on, the longest edge is then shortened by 25% and the search is run again; that is repeated at most four times and the image is not taken below 480 pixels. The result screen writes the quality used, the number of attempts, the gain and any change of dimensions; if the target could not be met, that is said plainly as well. WebP and JPG give the best result. Because PNG is lossless it usually cannot meet the target. EXIF information is deleted by default. You can upload up to 20 images at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your image. Drag it in or pick it; you can upload up to 20 images to bring down to the same target.
- Choose the target size and the format. Write a KB value a little under the platform's limit; choose WebP or JPG as the format.
- Compress and download. The new size, the quality and any change of dimensions appear on screen. Download the result.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference from “Image Compressor”?
In the Image Compressor you choose the quality and the size comes out accordingly. Here you choose the size and the quality is found accordingly. If you have to meet a limit, this tool is more practical.
I got a warning that the target could not be met.
The image is too big or the target too small. Switch the “Also reduce the dimensions if needed” option on, make the format WebP, or raise the target a little.
Why a little under the target rather than exactly on it?
The tool chooses the highest quality that does not pass the target. The result stays a little under it; that is so you never go over the limit.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
