SEE THE SCENES IN NUMBERS.
Video Frame Analysis measures the visual change between consecutive frames and marks the points where the change passes the threshold you set as a scene boundary. The result is listed with each scene's start time, duration and change value, and can be downloaded as JSON. Nothing is encoded during the analysis, the frames are only decoded; that is why it is far faster than a conversion. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files can be uploaded up to 10 GB.
The scene threshold is set between 0.1 and 0.8; a small value finds more scenes, a large one marks only the clear cuts. The default of 0.35 is a balance chosen by measurement. It is used to break a long interview into sections, to draw up a shot list before editing, or to see the moments where the camera changed. If you paste the cut points into the “Video Cutter” as a list of times, you split the scenes into separate clips in a single pass.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The duration and frame rate are read.
- Set the threshold. If too many scenes are missed, lower the threshold; if unnecessary boundaries come out, raise it. If you are not sure, start with 0.35.
- Analyze and take the report. The scene list appears on screen with timestamps; download it as JSON or carry the times over to the cutting tool.
Frequently asked questions
Does it find soft transitions too?
It finds cuts (sudden scene changes) reliably. With soft transitions such as fades and dissolves the difference is spread over several frames, so the threshold may not be passed; lowering the threshold helps with those transitions, but false positives go up too.
How do I produce clips from the result?
Paste the start times from the report into the time list box in the “Video Cutter”, line by line (for example “12.4 - 47.9”); each line becomes a clip and they are all cut in a single pass.
How should I choose the threshold?
The default threshold finds cuts cleanly in most videos. If too many boundaries are marked (camera movement and lighting changes being taken for scenes), raise it; if transitions between similarly coloured scenes are being missed, lower it. Lowering the threshold also increases false positives.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
