BRING OLD RECORDINGS INTO TODAY.
AVI → MP4 converts AVI videos to MP4 that opens on today's devices. AVI is a container Microsoft introduced in 1992; old digital cameras, the video mode of photo cameras, older screen recorders and archives compressed with Xvid or DivX use this format. Phones, smart TVs, social networks and browsers often do not open AVI. MP4 (H.264 + AAC) plays on almost all of these devices.
The old codecs inside an AVI (Xvid, DivX, MJPEG or uncompressed video) are re-encoded to H.264, and MP3 or PCM audio to AAC. Quality has three levels: High quality, Balanced, Small file. If you like, you can pick a fixed video bitrate, lower the resolution, reduce the frame rate or remove the audio. In interlaced camera recordings the lines are not merged. You can upload up to 8 videos at once, each up to 10 GB; several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your AVI file. Drag the file in or select it. The source codec, resolution, duration and audio stream are read; a broken file is reported right away.
- Choose the quality. Balanced is the right spot for most jobs. High quality for archiving, Small file for sharing.
- Convert and download. Progress and an estimated time remaining are shown. Download the finished MP4; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Will quality drop when I convert AVI to MP4?
Every re-encode is lossy, but Xvid and DivX are old, inefficient codecs. H.264 carries the same picture with less data; at the High quality or Balanced level the difference is not visible to the eye.
How does the file size change?
It depends on the source. MJPEG and uncompressed AVIs shrink clearly in H.264; Xvid and DivX files usually shrink at the Balanced level. If you need to get down to a particular size, use the target size mode of the “Video Compressor” tool.
Why does the picture look striped (combed)?
Some old video cameras record interlaced: every frame is made of two half-frames. This tool does not merge the lines; the stripes in moving scenes are in the source too and appear the same in the MP4.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
