LET IT PLAY BACKWARDS.
Reverse Video produces a new video that runs the recording from the end to the beginning. The last frame becomes the first, the first becomes the last. This is how you get shots like water pouring back into a glass or a person jumping back up. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files can be uploaded.
The file limit in this tool is 2 GB, not the 10 GB used elsewhere on the site. The reason is technical: reversing cannot process the video piece by piece, it has to hold the whole picture in memory. Holding a 10 GB recording in memory would lock up the server. Long recordings are still slow; cutting out the part you want with “Video Cutter” first and reversing that is far quicker. With the “Reverse the audio as well” box ticked the sound runs backwards too; untick it and the picture runs backwards while the sound runs forwards.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag or choose your file. At most 2 GB. The length and resolution are read; on long recordings you are told up front that the job will be slow.
- Decide what happens to the sound. With “Reverse the audio as well” ticked the sound runs backwards — speech becomes unintelligible, but that is right for an effect. If you want music or narration to stay forwards, untick the box.
- Reverse and download. Choose the output format and quality level, then start the job. Watch the progress; download the finished video.
Frequently asked questions
Why 2 GB and not 10 GB?
To make the last frame first, reversing has to see the frames from beginning to end; it cannot work through the stream piece by piece and holds the video in memory. 2 GB is the limit the server can carry safely. To reverse part of a longer recording, cut that part out first with “Video Cutter”.
Is the sound reversed too?
That is up to you. With the box ticked the sound plays backwards; speech becomes unintelligible, but it matches the picture exactly. With the box unticked the sound runs forwards as in the source, over the reversed picture.
Does the quality drop?
The picture is re-encoded; at the High or Balanced level the difference is not visible to the eye. Resolution, frame rate and length do not change — only the order of the frames is reversed.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
