OPEN UP A DARK SHOT.
Video Colour Adjust lets you change the four basic values of the picture. Brightness lightens or darkens the whole image. Contrast widens the gap between the light and dark areas. Saturation sets how vivid the colours are: −100 turns the picture completely grey, +100 makes it as vivid as it gets. Gamma works on the midtones — it is the right setting for opening up dark areas without shifting the brightness as a whole. On top of these there are five more settings for white balance and tones: temperature shifts the picture towards orange or blue, tint towards green or magenta, and hue shift rotates every colour around the colour wheel; shadows and highlights brighten or hold back the dark and the light areas separately.
The middle of all four settings means “leave alone”: 0 for brightness, contrast and saturation, 100% for gamma. For temperature, tint, hue shift, shadows and highlights, 0 also means leave alone. Leave them all as they are and the picture is untouched, only the format changes. Moving in small steps is the right approach; pushing a single setting to the extreme can flatten the sky to plain white or the shadows to plain black, and that detail does not come back. To rescue a dark shot, raise the gamma first and add brightness little by little only if that is not enough. If you want a ready-made look, the “Video Filter” tool is separate. You can upload up to 8 videos at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag or choose your file. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files can be uploaded, up to 10 GB.
- Set the values. Brightness, contrast and saturation run from −100 to +100, gamma from 10% to 300%. A setting left in the middle does not touch the picture.
- Apply and download. Choose the output format and quality level, then start the job. If you don't like the result, upload the source again and try other values.
Frequently asked questions
Should I raise the brightness or the gamma?
For a dark shot, gamma first. Brightness shifts every tone together and burns out the light areas; gamma opens up the midtones only and leaves the bright areas alone. If the whole picture is equally dark, brightness is right; if only the shadows are closed up, gamma is.
Can I make it black and white?
Yes, set the saturation to −100. If black and white is all you want, the ready-made Black and white look in the “Video Filter” tool gives the same result in one click.
If I overdo it, can it be undone?
If you still have your source file, yes — upload it again and try other values. But there is no way back from an output that has already been processed: a sky burned out to white or a shadow crushed to black carries no detail in that file any more.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
