MAKE A QUIET RECORDING AUDIBLE.
Audio Volume Booster raises the level of a recording that was captured too quietly. There are four steps: +3 dB is a slight lift, +6 dB is a clear lift that doubles the sound pressure, +10 dB is a strong lift, and +15 dB is for lectures, meetings or very quiet interviews recorded with the phone far away. The boost is applied evenly to the whole file.
Raising the volume can push peaks above the maximum level, and then the sound distorts. To prevent this, the “Prevent clipping (limiter)” option is on by default: peaks are kept below the limit while the rest of the sound gets louder. Boosting also raises the recording’s own noise, hum and hiss by the same amount. If you want to bring the whole file to a specific target level, for a podcast release for example, “Audio Volume Normaliser” gives a more accurate result. The output can be MP3, Opus, Vorbis, FLAC, WAV or M4A. You can upload up to 8 files at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your audio file. Drag and drop or choose the file. Its duration and codec are read.
- Choose how much to boost. Try +6 dB first. Leave the limiter on. Then choose the output format and bitrate.
- Boost, listen, download. Listen to the result; if it’s still too quiet, try again with a higher step. The copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
How many dB should I choose?
+6 dB makes the sound noticeably louder and is enough for most recordings. If the recording is barely audible, try +10 or +15 dB, and always listen to the result.
What happens if I turn the limiter off?
Peaks that go past the maximum level get cut off and the sound distorts and crackles. Only turn it off if you’re sure the source is very quiet.
Does the background noise get louder too?
Yes. Boosting raises everything by the same amount. It doesn’t remove noise.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
