HUGE WAV, LIGHT MP3.
WAV → MP3 converts uncompressed WAV files to MP3. WAV is the standard format of audio recorders, music software and studio exports; it is lossless but takes up a lot of space: one minute at CD quality is about 10 MB. The same minute as a 192 kbps MP3 is about 1.4 MB. For sending by email, sharing in a messaging app, putting on a website or copying to a phone, MP3 is far more practical.
You choose a bitrate between 64 and 320 kbps. 256 or 320 kbps suits music, 192 kbps general use, and 64 or 96 kbps speech and meeting recordings. WAV is lossless; some information is permanently lost when converting to MP3. So keep your original WAV file in your archive, as you may need to edit it again or convert it to another format later. If you want a lossless but smaller file, choose FLAC in “Audio Converter”. You can upload up to 8 files at once; they are all converted with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your WAV file. Drag and drop or choose the file. Its duration and channel information are read.
- Choose the bitrate. 256–320 kbps for music, 192 kbps for general use, 64–96 kbps for speech.
- Convert and download. Download the MP3 when it is ready. The copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller does the file get?
A CD-quality WAV runs at about 1411 kbps. A 192 kbps MP3 is roughly seven times smaller, and a 128 kbps MP3 roughly eleven times smaller.
How much quality do I lose?
At 192 kbps and above most listeners can’t hear a difference. On very good headphones, in quiet passages and with high-frequency sounds like cymbals, the difference becomes noticeable below 128 kbps.
Is there a lossless but smaller format?
Yes, FLAC. It usually halves the size of a WAV without losing any information. You can choose FLAC in “Audio Converter”.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
