KEEP THE SUBJECT, DROP THE BACKGROUND.
Remove Background separates the subject of a photo (a person, product, animal or object) from its background and makes the background transparent. The separation is done by four AI models running together on the server (BiRefNet): one finds what the subject is, two catch fine detail such as strands of hair and thin edges at high resolution, and the fourth looks for separate parts that could otherwise be missed. Only strands that are attached to the subject and share its colour are added; lines and specks in the background are filtered out, and the old background colour that bleeds into the edges is cleaned away. No settings are needed; processing starts as soon as you drop the image and takes about 3–5 minutes per image. The result downloads as a PNG: the background is transparent by default, and the “Background” choice can fill it with white, black or your own colour code. It is ready for product shots, profile pictures, presentations and cover designs.
You can check the result with the before/after slider or by opening the two images side by side. If the model is not installed on the server, the tool falls back to a pure algorithm; a tolerance setting then appears and it gives good results on flat, single-colour backgrounds. Images whose longest edge is over 4000 pixels are reduced to 4000 pixels before processing. You can upload up to 5 images at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your image. Drag and drop or choose the photo. PNG, JPG and WebP are the most common formats. Processing starts as soon as it is uploaded.
- Check the result. Move the before/after slider; open the “Show side by side” section to inspect the edges up close.
- Download as PNG. Pick the background (transparent, white, black or a colour code) and download the PNG. Use the “New image” button for another picture.
Frequently asked questions
How does it handle hair and fine edges?
Alongside the model that finds the subject, two detail models examine the image at high resolution, so strands of hair, fur and thin edges are kept one by one, and the old background colour that bleeds into the edges is cleaned away, so no coloured halo is left. If the subject and background colours are very close, small flaws may remain along the edges.
Why is it always PNG?
PNG is the format that carries transparency, opens everywhere and is lossless. If you want a smaller file, convert the result to WebP with “Image Compressor”; WebP keeps transparency too.
Can I fill the background with a solid colour?
Yes. In the “Background” choice under the result, pick the “White” or “Black” card, or type a #RRGGBB code into the “Custom colour code” box (example: #FF8800). The background is applied instantly, without processing the image again; the soft transition at the edges blends into the new colour, so no halo of the old background is left.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
