SAME PICTURE, NO SOUND.
Mute Video silences the audio channel of a video completely but leaves the channel in the file. The picture is not re-encoded: the file is ready within seconds and the source quality is preserved exactly. The silent audio channel is written with a patent-free codec (MP3 or Opus). That way the result opens without trouble in platforms and programs that expect an audio channel (some social network uploaders, editing templates).
MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files can be uploaded up to 10 GB. If you want to take the audio channel out of the file altogether, use the “Remove Audio from Video” tool; the difference between the two is whether the channel stays. If you want to put a different sound over the video, the “Add Audio to Video” tool both replaces the old sound and can let you hear both together. You can upload up to 8 videos at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The audio stream and duration are read.
- Start. There are no settings in this tool: the picture is copied as it is and the audio channel is written silent.
- Download. The file is ready within seconds. Download it; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between muting and removing the audio?
Muting leaves a silent audio channel in the file; it is compatible with platforms and programs that want one. Removing drops the channel entirely, and the file gets a little smaller. If you are not sure, mute: it opens everywhere.
Does the quality drop?
No. The video stream is copied without being touched; resolution, bitrate and frame rate stay exactly the same. Only the audio channel is rewritten.
Can I silence just one part of the sound?
This tool silences all of the audio. To silence a particular section, first split the video into pieces with “Video Cutter”, mute the piece in question here, and put it back together with “Video Merger”.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
