PUT A MOMENT INTO AN ENDLESS LOOP.
Video → GIF turns the range you choose from a video into a looping GIF. You set the start second and the length, then adjust the width in pixels and the frame rate in frames per second. How many frames the GIF will have and its estimated size are calculated on screen before you start, so you can bring the dimensions down before producing a heavy file. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files can be uploaded.
A GIF carries at most 256 colors, so the tool first takes a palette specific to the content from the frames in the selected range, then encodes the frames with that palette. The result has less banding and more accurate color than GIFs produced with a fixed palette. For reaction GIFs, product demos and short how-to loops used in chat apps, on social networks and on web pages, you can start right here.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. Duration and resolution are read, and you move in the player to the moment you want to turn into a GIF.
- Set the range and the size. Choose the start second, the length, the width and the frame rate. The frame count and estimated file size update instantly; 480 px and 12–15 frames per second are enough for most sharing.
- Produce the GIF and download. The palette is taken, the frames are encoded, and a progress percentage appears. Preview the finished GIF, download it, or try another range.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the GIF so big?
A GIF stores every frame without compression, in at most 256 colors; a long range, a large width and a high frame rate blow the file up quickly. Keep the length at 3–6 seconds, bring the width down to 320–480 px and choose a frame rate of 10–15. The estimated size is shown on screen; if it is over your limit, lower the values.
Is there sound?
No. The GIF format carries no audio; only a loop of pictures is produced. If you want a short clip with sound, cut the range out as a clip with “Video Cutter”, or produce a light video with “Video → WebM”.
What should I do if the colors look wrong?
Shorten the range: because the palette is taken from all of the selected frames, colors are averaged out over long ranges that contain a scene change. Reducing the width also cuts down banding. In colorful scenes with gradients, WebM always looks better than GIF.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
