THE RAW SOUND, READY TO EDIT.
Video → WAV gives you the audio channel of a video as an uncompressed WAV file. WAV is the common language of audio editing programs: for editing, mixing, pulling time codes for subtitles or cleaning up sound, starting with WAV instead of MP3 prevents a loss of quality later on. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files can be uploaded up to 10 GB.
The sample rate is chosen as 48 kHz (the video standard), 44.1 kHz (CD) or 32 kHz; the channel layout as stereo or mono; and the bit depth as 16 bit (common) or 24 bit (studio). Choose “Don't change (whatever the source is)” for the sample rate and channels to keep the source values exactly; a 44.1 kHz mono recording is then not inflated to 48 kHz stereo. Because WAV is uncompressed, the file grows: about 10 MB per minute for 48 kHz stereo 16 bit. If the audio in the video is already lossy (AAC, for instance), WAV does not bring that loss back; it simply adds no new loss on top of it. You can upload up to 8 videos at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The sample rate and channel count of the audio stream are read.
- Choose the audio settings. Set the sample rate, the channel count and the bit depth. If you are unsure, 48 kHz, stereo, 16 bit opens without trouble in every editing program.
- Extract and download. Because the job never encodes the picture, it finishes quickly. Download the WAV file; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
WAV or MP3?
WAV if you are going to edit the sound, add music over it or use it in another project; MP3 if you are only going to listen or share. WAV is lossless but ten times bigger; MP3 is small but loses a little with every encode.
When do I need 24 bit?
When the source was recorded at 24 bit (a professional camera, an external recorder) and will be worked on in a studio. The audio from phones and consumer cameras is 16 bit; choosing 24 bit there makes the file bigger without adding information.
48 kHz or 44.1 kHz?
Video projects use 48 kHz, so choose 48 for audio that is going back into a video. The world of music and CDs is 44.1 kHz. Keeping the source rate is the cleanest route; the tool shows you the source value on screen.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
