LIGHTER FILE. SMOOTHER FLOW.
Video Compressor reduces the file size of your video while preserving picture quality as far as possible. You can upload MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files up to 10 GB. There are two ways to work: either you pick a quality step (five levels, from Highest Quality to Extreme Compression) or you type a target file size in MB directly, and the tool works out the bitrate that will fit into it.
Before it starts you see the estimated output size and quality; if the target is too aggressive you get a warning. When the job is done the output is verified: the deviation from the target and the measured quality are shown on screen, and if the target was missed a second attempt runs automatically. If the source is already compressed and the file will not get smaller, you are given the original as it is, so you lose no quality. You can drop the resolution to 720p, 1080p or 4K, re-encode the audio between 96 and 320 kbps, or remove it entirely.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The source is analyzed: resolution, duration, codec and current bitrate appear on screen, and a suggested output size is calculated.
- Set your target. Pick a level with “Quality priority” or type a size in MB into “Target file size”. If you want, change the resolution, audio bitrate, 2-pass encoding and the H.264 / AV1 codec choice from the other settings on the same screen.
- Compress and download. Watch the progress, the live bitrate and the time remaining. When it finishes you get a compression summary: old and new size, the saving, and the measured quality. Download the file; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
How much does quality drop?
It depends on the step you choose. “Balanced” gives a reduction that most videos will not show to the eye; with “Extreme Compression” and very small target sizes, fine detail, text and dark scenes can break up. The tool estimates this in advance and warns you before starting if heavy compression will be needed.
Can I get down to a set size for WhatsApp or email?
Yes. Switch to “Target file size” mode and type the limit in MB (16 or 25, for example). The tool works out the bitrate that will fit, gets close with two-pass encoding, and runs a second attempt automatically if it misses. The output is verified together with the deviation from the target.
Which codec is used, and will it open on a phone?
The default output is H.264 in an MP4 container; every phone, computer and social network opens it. For a smaller file you can choose AV1; it is noticeably smaller at the same quality, but older devices may not play it. If you have a graphics card, a hardware encoder (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD) can also be selected; it is faster.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
