LEAVE THE PICTURE, TAKE THE SOUND.
Video → MP3 separates the audio channel of a video and gives it to you as an MP3 file. One step is enough to take the song out of a concert recording, the narration out of a lecture video or the conversation out of an interview. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and M4V files can be uploaded up to 10 GB, and because the picture is never encoded the job takes very little time relative to the length of the video.
Audio quality is chosen as 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps; the default is 320 kbps. If the source audio bitrate is low, a higher MP3 bitrate adds no quality and only makes the file bigger; the tool shows you the source bitrate on screen so you can avoid needless size. The MP3 patents have expired, and the output opens on every device and in every program. For lossless audio, use the “Video → WAV” tool. You can upload up to 8 videos at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The codec and bitrate of the audio stream are read, and a file with no audio channel is reported right away.
- Choose the audio quality. 128 kbps is enough for speech, 192 is balanced for most music, and 320 is the highest MP3 quality. Going above the source bitrate adds nothing.
- Convert and download. Press “Convert to MP3” and watch the progress. Download the MP3 when it is ready; the files are deleted from the server when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Which bitrate should I choose?
128 kbps is enough for a podcast or a lecture recording and keeps the file small. For music, 192 or 256 kbps is the balanced choice. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality; if the source audio is already 128 kbps AAC, choosing 320 makes the file bigger without raising the quality.
Does the audio quality suffer?
MP3 is a lossy format, so whatever the source audio codec is, it is encoded once more. At 256–320 kbps that difference cannot be told apart by ear. If you want no loss at all, choose FLAC in the “Video → WAV” or “Extract Audio from Video” tool.
Can I take the audio from only part of the video?
This tool takes the audio of the whole video. For a specific range, first cut that part out as a clip with “Video Cutter” and upload the clip here; or, after getting the MP3, keep the range you want with “Audio Crop”.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
