LIGHT, ROYALTY-FREE VIDEO FOR THE WEB.
Video → WebM converts your video into the WebM format that web browsers play directly. As the codec you choose VP9 (encodes fast, opens in every modern browser) or AV1 (the smallest file at the same quality, but slow to encode); in both cases the audio is encoded with Opus. VP9, AV1 and Opus are royalty-free, so you can use the output wherever you like without licensing worries.
Quality has three levels: High quality, Balanced and Small file. If you like, you can pick a fixed video bitrate instead of the quality level. Resolution and frame rate are kept by default; in the same pass you can lower the resolution, reduce the frame rate or remove the audio. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and M4V files can be uploaded up to 10 GB. WebM gives a noticeably smaller file than MP4, especially for website background videos, product animations and sharing outside social networks; compared with a GIF of the same content it is dozens of times lighter. You can upload up to 8 videos at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The codec, resolution and duration are read.
- Choose the codec and the quality. VP9 for speed and compatibility, AV1 for the smallest file. Leaving the quality at Balanced is enough for most web use.
- Convert and download. Watch the progress; if you chose AV1 it can take longer. Download the finished WebM; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Which devices open WebM?
Chrome, Firefox, Edge, current Safari versions and Android devices play VP9 WebM directly. AV1 needs a newer device and browser. For a television, an older iPhone or somewhere like WhatsApp, producing MP4 is safer.
VP9 or AV1?
AV1 if file size is your first priority and you can wait: at the same quality it gives an even smaller file than VP9. VP9 if speed and wide compatibility come first. If the output is going to a small website the AV1 difference is noticeable; if it is going to a social network, the platform re-encodes it anyway, so VP9 is enough.
Can I convert video with transparency (an alpha channel)?
This tool encodes the picture in the standard color format; the alpha channel is not preserved. Animations that need transparency have to be handled in an editing program in their source format.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
