MOV → MP4 converts the MOV videos recorded by an iPhone, iPad or Mac to MP4. MOV is Apple's QuickTime container; some Windows players, Android phones, televisions, web forms and presentation programs do not open it. MP4 plays almost everywhere. The iPhone often records video with HEVC (H.265); this tool encodes HEVC footage to H.264, which gives the widest compatibility.
“Conversion method” is set to “Without re-encoding when possible (fast, lossless)” by default: if the source is already H.264, the picture is moved into the new container as it is, the job takes seconds and the quality does not change. If the audio is AAC, it is copied too. If the source is HEVC, or you change the size or frame rate, or pick a fixed bitrate, the picture is re-encoded to H.264; the High quality, Balanced and Small file levels then apply. HDR recordings are not tone-mapped; colors may look different from the source. You can upload up to 8 videos at once, each up to 10 GB. For other formats, use the “Video → MP4” tool.
From start to finish
- Upload your MOV file. Drag the file in or select it. Videos transferred from an iPhone work directly; the codec, resolution and duration are read.
- Choose the method. The default method is right for most jobs. If you want the picture re-encoded no matter what, choose “Always re-encode to H.264”.
- Convert and download. Download the finished MP4; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Will quality drop when I turn my iPhone video into MP4?
Not if the source is H.264: the picture is moved without re-encoding and the frames stay identical. Encoding an HEVC source to H.264 loses a little; at the High quality or Balanced level the difference is not visible to the eye. The file may grow slightly, because H.264 is less efficient than HEVC.
Why does it sometimes take seconds and sometimes minutes?
Moving without re-encoding only changes the container, so it takes seconds. If the source is HEVC, or the size, frame rate or bitrate changes, every frame is re-encoded; the time depends on the length and resolution of the video.
Can I convert several videos at once?
Yes. You can upload up to 8 videos at a time; they are all converted with the same settings and download as a single ZIP. If you upload one video, you do not need to open a ZIP: the MP4 downloads directly.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
