THE ONE FORMAT THAT OPENS EVERYWHERE.
Video → MP4 converts your video into the MP4 format that every device plays. The picture is encoded with H.264 and the audio with AAC; that pair gives the widest compatibility with phones, televisions, social networks and presentation programs. MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, M4V, MPG, WMV, FLV and TS files can be uploaded up to 10 GB. Files that are already MP4 but will not open on some devices (MP4s with an unusual codec, for example) are brought into line by this tool as well. In this tool the picture is always re-encoded; if your MOV or MKV file already carries H.264, “MOV → MP4” or “MKV → MP4” moves the picture across without re-encoding, in seconds and without loss.
Quality has three levels: High quality, Balanced, Small file. If you like, you can pick a fixed video bitrate instead of the quality level. Resolution and frame rate are kept by default; in the same pass you can lower the resolution, reduce the frame rate or remove the audio. H.264 and AAC are covered by a patent pool; if you want a royalty-free output, use the “Video → WebM” tool. If you want to compress the file down to a particular size, the “Video Compressor” with its target size mode gives a better result. You can upload up to 8 videos at once; they are all processed with the same settings, and several files download as a single ZIP.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The source codec, resolution, duration and audio stream are read; a file with no video stream is reported right away.
- Choose the quality. Balanced is the right spot for most sharing. High quality is for archiving and editing, Small file for messaging.
- Convert and download. Progress and an estimated time remaining are shown. Download the finished MP4; the copy on the server is deleted when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Will quality drop when I turn my MOV into MP4?
MOV files from an iPhone or a camera usually already carry H.264 or HEVC. Re-encoding to H.264 is lossy, but at the High or Balanced level the difference is not visible to the eye. HEVC sources can grow a little when converted to H.264; that is normal, as H.264 is less efficient but more compatible.
Do the subtitles in an MKV carry over to MP4?
This tool converts picture and sound; subtitles, chapters and extra audio tracks inside MKV are not carried over. If you want to keep subtitles, the “Video Compressor” tool has a keep-subtitles option.
Which setting for Instagram and TikTok?
Balanced quality, MP4. The platforms re-encode whatever you upload; uploading at high quality preserves the picture, while the Small file level combined with the platform's own compression gives a noticeable loss. For a vertical frame, first make it 9:16 with the “Aspect Ratio Converter”.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
