SEE WHAT IS INSIDE THE FILE.
Video Metadata draws out the technical record of a video file: container type, video codec and profile, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, duration, pixel format, audio codec, sample rate and channel count, plus subtitle and chapter details if there are any. The file you upload is not changed; the report appears on screen and can be downloaded as JSON. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, M4V, MPG, WMV, FLV and TS files can be uploaded up to 10 GB.
This information is the first place to look when you are solving a problem: if a video will not open on a device, the codec is incompatible; if the sound drifts, the frame rate or sample rate is not what was expected; if the file is larger than expected, the bitrate is high. When a social network or a broadcast platform asks for a particular codec, resolution and frame rate, you see whether the file complies before uploading; and if it does not, you move on to the relevant conversion tool from here.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. Drag the file in or select it. The report is read from the headers; for the clean copy the file is copied from start to finish without re-encoding, which can take a few minutes for large files.
- Look through the report. Picture, sound and container details are listed in separate sections, with readable names and raw values side by side.
- Download the clean copy or the report. Use “Download file without metadata” to get the copy without tags; save the report as JSON if you like. The files are deleted from the server when you leave the tool.
Frequently asked questions
What information do I see?
The container (MP4, MKV…), the video codec (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1…), profile and level, resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, bitrate, pixel format and color details; the audio codec, bitrate, sample rate and channel layout; the duration, total size, number of streams, any subtitle and chapter list, and tags such as the rotation flag and the recording date.
Why will the video not open on some devices?
Usually because of the codec: HEVC, AV1 or 10-bit color are not supported on every device. Look at the video codec in the report; if it is incompatible, convert it to H.264 with “Video → MP4”. The audio codec can be a problem too; for MP4, AAC is the safest choice.
Can I see whether the file carries location or personal details?
Yes; the recording device, the software, the date and any location tags are listed in the report. To remove them, use “Download file without metadata” below the report: without re-encoding the picture or the sound, only the tags, the cover image and the data streams are taken out; the phone’s rotation information is kept.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
