THE BEST FRAMES, AUTOMATICALLY.
Video Thumbnail Extractor finds the frames inside a video that work best as a cover or promo image. Frames are examined across the whole video and each one is scored on four criteria: sharpness (45%), density of interest (25%), color vividness (20%) and exposure (10%). Blurry, dark or empty frames are filtered out this way. The chosen frames are spread apart from one another; otherwise the best five would all come from the same scene.
You choose how many frames you want, between 1 and 20, with 5 as the default. Frames are saved as PNG (lossless), JPG or WebP; the longest edge can stay at the video's own size or be reduced to 1920 or 1280 pixels. All the frames arrive in a single ZIP; the file names carry each frame's time in the video, and secim.json inside the ZIP shows every frame's score. Video uploads are accepted up to 10 GB. If you want the frame at a particular moment, or many frames at fixed intervals, “Video to Images” is the better fit.
From start to finish
- Upload your video. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and other common formats; up to 10 GB.
- Pick the number of frames and the format. For thumbnail candidates, 5–8 frames, PNG and the video's own size are a good start.
- Download the ZIP. The frames come down in one ZIP, named with their times; the scores are in the secim.json file.
Frequently asked questions
What are the frames chosen on?
On a score made of sharpness, density of interest, color vividness and exposure. The chosen frames are also kept far apart so that they come from different parts of the video.
Does it recognize faces or smiles?
No. The score is worked out from image properties; facial expression is not judged. The result is a short shortlist, and you make the final choice.
How do I get the frame at a particular second?
This tool picks the frames itself. To take the frame at a particular second, use “Video to Images” or “Frame Extractor”.
Does my file stay on the server?
No. Your file reaches the server only to be processed and is deleted when the job is done; the output is deleted too once you download it and leave the tool. You don't need an account, a name or an email address, and your files are never sent to a third-party service. It is free to use: we set no hourly or daily quota on the number of jobs, we don't make you watch an ad before processing, and we add no watermark to the output.
